On September 2024, I embarked on an extraordinary journey to Yunnan, immersing myself in the rich and ancient heritage of the Naxi people. My exploration began under the mentorship of Mr. He, an expert in Dongba culture and one of the few remaining custodians of this unique tradition. Learning the intricate Dongba pictographs — one of the world’s last surviving pictographic writing systems — was both challenging and deeply rewarding. Each symbol told a story, carrying the weight of centuries of wisdom, mythology, and cultural identity. Through hours of study and conversation, I gained invaluable insights into the philosophy and spiritual depth behind these characters.

Beyond the classroom, my journey took me to a Naxi village, where I experienced the vibrant musical heritage of the community. I had the privilege of watching a local Naxi band perform, their music blending traditional folk melodies with instruments unique to their culture. The rhythm and harmony spoke of their history and way of life, creating a soundscape that was both evocative and moving. Inspired by their passion, I eagerly joined the musical experience, learning the cultural significance behind each note and beat.

My exploration of Naxi culture culminated in visiting a local paper-making workshop. The traditional paper-making craft, passed down through generations, was a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of the Naxi people. Observing the meticulous process — from selecting the right materials to creating the final sheets — gave me a profound appreciation for this fading art form. I even had the opportunity to try my hand at the craft, shaping my own piece of handmade paper as a tangible connection to the past.

This journey was more than an academic pursuit; it was a cultural immersion that reshaped my understanding of tradition, creativity, and resilience. Through the study of Dongba script, the resonance of Naxi music, and the artistry of paper-making, I discovered the importance of preserving endangered cultures and gained a renewed commitment to cultural appreciation and exploration.
