I had the privilege of organizing and hosting a forum titled “Rejecting Emotions, Combating Depression, and Enhancing Student Well-Being.” This event aimed to address the increasingly prevalent mental health challenges faced by middle and high school students and explore comprehensive, practical solutions beyond medication.

The forum gathered an impressive array of experts and stakeholders, including psychiatrists, traditional Chinese medicine doctors, neuroscientists, psychology professors, sociologists, school principals, parents, and student representatives. Through a combination of keynote lectures and panel discussions, we delved into the root causes of adolescent emotional distress and the diverse approaches needed to foster holistic well-being.

One of the most impactful aspects of this forum was the opportunity to showcase the practical mental health initiatives already being implemented in schools. Under the guidance of Professor Cui Donghong from Jiaotong University and Principal Hadlin, the American head of our partner school, we introduced students to alternative therapeutic practices such as meditation training, animal-assisted therapy, the practice of Yi Jin Jing (a form of traditional Chinese exercise), and Native American drumming sessions. The results have been remarkable—students reported noticeable improvements in their emotional stability, concentration, and overall happiness.
Beyond providing theoretical perspectives, the forum created a space for collaboration and shared learning. Parents gained insights into their children’s mental health struggles and the importance of nurturing supportive environments both at home and in school. Educators and experts exchanged ideas on integrating innovative mental health practices into academic settings, ensuring students receive the emotional support they need alongside their educational growth.

This event reaffirmed my belief in the power of collective effort and interdisciplinary collaboration when addressing complex issues like adolescent mental health. Moving forward, I am committed to continuing this work, expanding these initiatives, and ensuring every student has access to the tools and support needed to thrive.
